about

Howlite have been crafting their dreamscape sounds since 2016, garnering attention both locally and internationally. The release of their latest EP ‘Not Here’ further builds on the groups ethereal, indie foundations. With pulsing heartbeats, swirling soars of harmonies and frontwoman Alison Thom’s gloriously powerful vocal lines, 'Not Here' encompasses the textured and incredibly captivating Howlite sound.

With strong trip-hop elements, and pockets of pop song writing, there is a sense of confidence and focus within ‘Not Here’, underpinned by the first single from the EP, pillowy-pop power of ‘Reducer’, released in August of 2019. The single is currently tracking to reach a 40K streaming milestone with features on Spotify New Music in Germany and Switzerland and Spotify Fresh Finds. It has been on rotation on Triple J Unearthed and made appearances on the J’s ‘Home and Hosed’, ‘Roots and All’, and ‘Something More’ whilst also gaining spins on 3RRR, PBS, SYN, 4ZZZ and JOY. The end of 2019 saw the release of ‘Reducer’ accompanied by the dark and brooding ‘Olympia’, followed by the delicate ‘Infancy’ released during lockdown in May 2020. Howlite then dropped the deep boiling hymn ‘Stranger’, supported with the haunting black and white music video to praising audiences.

Moving into the EP release, their final single installments ‘Canary’ and 'Blood Type' help define Howlite as a band poised with the confidence and curiosity to explore otherworldly beauty. As Thom explains, writing and recording this EP was a process of “trying to understand what is happening in my head”. What results is a collection of bracingly honest, earnest and reflective songs that explore mental health, heartache, femininity and selfhood. These ideas and themes are anchored by Thom’s velvety, captivating vocals and the band’s intricate, dark instrumentation, that recalls bands like Portishead, Slowdive and Daughter
